What is Peel and Stick Backsplash Tile

There are a variety of peel and stick backsplash options available. In particular, today we are using Snazzydecal vinyl tile stickers. In fact, these are the same type of tiles we used in my bathroom makeover last year. Which dramatically changed the look and feel of our bathroom, bringing it into the 21st century.
These vinyl tiles are a self-adhesive vinyl film. The tiles are printed with the most cutting edge printing technology with a lamination that seal all color within the films to make it super durable and scratch resistant.
In addition, the material is a commercial grade heavy duty vinyl, that’s used for outdoor signage and vehicle wraps.
In fact, the vinyl tiles are fully waterproof as long as the surface is smooth.
Additionally, it is important to note that the surface be non-porous and smooth for the adhesive to work well. It must have full contact on the surface to avoid peeling over time.
As a matter of fact, you’ll be seeing more of these vinyl tiles in my home soon. It’s definitely a great way to update ugly tile on a budget.
These tiles are renter friendly. In fact, they can easily be removed without leaving any stick residue.

How to Install a Peel & Stick Backsplash
Prep the Surface
Before installing this peel and stick backsplash, you’ll want to make sure the surface is clean and free from grease or oils that are common in a kitchen.
Clean the wall or tile surface first with a degreasing product like TSP or Dawn. We first washed down the wall with a little dawn and water. This will ensure that the vinyl tiles adhere well.
Cutting Tiles
So, let’s start to install the tile.
First of all, these tiles can be printed to your custom size. In fact, our tiles were printed to the exact height of the backsplash. That means no waste, no trimming.
Today we are installing the vinyl tiles directly on the wall.
We chose to have 4 tiles printed per piece with a grout line. They could have been printed as one large tile as well. The choice is yours when you order the tiles.
They can also be install directly on an existing tile. If that’s the case, you will want to have your tiles printed to the exact size of the tile you are covering.

For this peel and stick backsplash there are a few obstacles we will need to cut around.
Therefore, we placed the tile into position and marked with a pencil the location of the outlet.

Actually, the tiles are easy to trim and cut. We just used a straight edge and an Xacto knife. But, they can easily be trimmed with scissors as well.

Once the tile has been trimmed, make a dry fit and see if you need to make any adjustments to the cut. While installing the vinyl tiles in my master bathroom, we found it helpful to use a paper trimmer too.

Install Vinyl Tile

To install fold back the backing 1″

Then, align your tile, once it’s straight, press the area where the backing is lifted.

Next, take a straight edge, like a ruler and smooth out the vinyl tile while slowly pulling the backing off.
This will ensure that you don’t have air bubbles and that the tile is adhered well to the surface.
If you do find you have an air bubble, pull back the tile and smooth it out again using a straight edge. Or if it’s close to the edge, work it out with your fingers.

Trim Tile Around Objects

Another obstacle you may come across while installing a peel and stick backsplash is a microwave oven.
For this area we left the tile a little big for the cut out.
Next, we aligned the tile pattern.
Then, we used the Xacto knife to trim around the microwave oven. Using this method we were able to get a nice clean cut on an irregular surface.
Completed Peel and Stick Backsplash

Installing this vinyl tile has totally transformed my mother-in-law’s kitchen and she is loving it! Clearly, adding a little pattern took her kitchen from drab to fab!
