Supplies

Faux embossed tin tile and a red heart cookie cutter.

This simple and sweet DIY project requires minimal supplies!

You’ll only need a few inexpensive items:

That’s it! Let’s get crafting!

Cut hearts

To create your heart shapes, create a heart pattern with paper or trace a heart-shaped cookie cutter onto the embossed tiles.

Then, carefully cut out the hearts using sharp scissors.

We decided to use a heart-shaped die-cut to cut out our tiles.

At first we were concerned that running it through the die-cut machine would flatten the embossing, but no need to worry.

This method worked perfectly and made them all uniform.

Faux brass finish

Now it’s time to give your tiles a stunning faux brass finish, you have a couple of options.

You can use a brass metallic spray paint for a quick and even coat.

However it’s just too cold to spray paint outside here, and I don’t want to deal with the fumes inside the house.

If you have been around here for a while you know we love using Rub ‘n Buff to get a realistic looking metallic finish.

In fact, we’ve used it on hardware, frames, glass, cardboard, accent table and ornaments, with amazing results.

Woman applied rub 'n buff to embossed faux tin tiles in a heart shape.

So we thought we’d give it a try on the plastic embossed tiles.

For our tiles we used Antique Gold Rub ‘n Buff, but European Gold may be another good option.

To apply Rub ‘n Buff, dab a little bit on an old paint brush and rub onto the tile surface in a circular motion until the entire surface is covered.

Then before it dries fully, gently rub the surface with a clean cloth, focusing on the raised areas of the embossing.

This will slightly buff the surface and remove a little bit of the gold finish from the raised areas.

Add cord

If you’re planning on hanging your hearts, punch a small hole at the top of the heart and insert a thin cord and knot the ends.

Another fun way to display the hearts is to punch a small hole on each side of the hearts and string them together for a Valentine heart garland.
