Take Stock of Your Christmas Storage Needs

Before you start to put away Christmas and begin organizing, take stock of everything: ornaments, lights, wreaths, garlands, and tree pieces.

Decide what to keep, donate, or toss.

If it hasn’t been used in years, or broken and can’t be repaired, maybe it’s time to let it go.

Make an inventory list and label your bins accordingly.

This is a key step in organizing Christmas decorations and helps prevent clutter from sneaking back in.

These smart storage tips will help protect your Christmas decor and keep everything organized, easy to find, and ready to use when the season rolls around again.

Containers and Bins

Choosing the right containers and bins can completely change how your Christmas decorations hold up year after year.

Small shoebox-sized containers are perfect for fragile ornaments and delicate decor, while specialty containers for ornaments, wreaths, and tree bags are a great investment you can reuse season after season.

Clear plastic totes and red canvas bins are used to store and organized Christmas decorations.

Durable items like garlands, tabletop trees, and greenery stems store well in large bins.

Labeled red and green storage totes keep Christmas decorations organized.

Clear bins with latch lids are our go-to because you can easily see what’s inside, and as bins need replacing, we’re slowly moving everything to clear containers.

Clear latched bins store Christmas ornaments, sorted by color.

Divided ornament containers are great for keeping delicate pieces organized, but large bins work beautifully for plastic ornaments when sorted by color.

Last year, I picked up a large canvas tote that holds eight ornament trays, and I love how it keeps everything neatly sorted by color and type.

Storage Tips and Fragile Items

When it comes to storage tips and fragile items, the key is to store like items together and give delicate pieces a little extra protection.

My mom has a large collection of nativity sets and Santas, so she sorts her Christmas decor by type.

Each nativity set piece is carefully wrapped in tissue paper or bubble wrap, then placed in its own zippered bag, finally all the sets are stored together in one bin.

She does the same with her Santa collection, wrapping each fragile Santa in hand towels or bubble wrap to keep them protected.

Large fragile glass ornaments are wrapped with paper and stored in a large clear storage bin.

I have several large glass ornaments that are too big for standard ornament boxes, so I wrap each one in paper and carefully place them in a large clear tote.

This method has worked really well for keeping them safe.

For smaller fragile ornaments, we love using shoebox-size containers or divided ornament boxes, with tissue paper added for an extra layer of protection.

Organization Tips and Systems

Creating simple organization systems makes storing Christmas decorations easier now and decorating faster later.

Group decorations by type, theme, or even by room so everything has a clear home.

Tangled lights are a universal headache.

Wrap strings of lights around a board, spool, or even an old piece of cardboard to keep them neat. Fragile ornaments can be stored in bubble wrap, egg cartons, or DIY inserts.

Labeling is key—especially for opaque bins—so you can grab exactly what you need without digging.

Use vertical space and shelving to keep bins accessible and off the floor.

Glittered snowflakes and ornaments are stored and organized in ziplock bags, then placed in a storage bin.

While glittered ornaments and Christmas decor are beautiful, they can be messy, so my mom likes to sort and store hers in Ziploc bags before placing them in a bin to contain the sparkle.

As mentioned before, keeping like items together works best—one bin for garlands, another for tabletop trees or bells, and ornaments sorted by color—always clearly labeled for easy access next season.

These Christmas storage hacks are easy, affordable, and keep decor in perfect shape year after year.

Christmas Tree Storage

When it comes to Christmas tree storage, ditch the box your tree came in—it’s nearly impossible to get the tree back in, and cramming it only creates more work later.

A Christmas tree storage bag is a much better option; they’re durable, easy to carry, and give your tree room to breathe.

Your tree will thank you when setup next year requires far less fluffing and frustration.

For pencil or slim trees you’d like to store upright, my mom swears by covering hers with an old fitted sheet and securing it with binder clips or safety pins.

This simple trick keeps branches protected and means significantly less fluffing when it’s time to decorate again.

Where to Store Christmas Decorations

When deciding where to store Christmas decorations, think about space, accessibility, and protection from damage.

While I have a basement storage room, it’s not large enough for all of my holiday decor, so I prefer to store most of it on an overhead rack in my garage.

My mom, on the other hand, has a spacious storage room where she can keep all her seasonal decorations within easy reach.

Upright trees are stored to the side of shelves along with other odd-sized seasonal items, and each tote is clearly labeled.

This system keeps everything organized and makes decorating each year so much easier and less stressful.
