Why Thrifting Is Our Secret to Spring Decorating

Steph and I absolutely love thrifting—the hunt, the sifting through crowded shelves, and the thrill of spotting a hidden treasure for our homes.

We genuinely look forward to our thrifting adventures, reminiscing about past finds and laughing at some of the strange and unexpected things we come across along the way.

This time, we decided to challenge ourselves: could we turn the common items we see all the time while thrifting into fresh decorating ideas for spring?

Thrifting is the perfect way to decorate on a budget, but it’s also how we layer in charm, character, and interest through vintage and unique pieces.

For this challenge, we pushed ourselves to use these common finds in new and creative ways to decorate our homes for spring.

Floral & Botanical Art and Prints

Vintage florals are one of the easiest ways to add instant spring charm to your home.

On our thrifting day, we came across several decorative plaques with botanical prints, but while digging through the framed art, I found a beautiful botanical print that felt perfect for the season.

Thrifted aqua blue bundt pan grows wheat grass and is styled with easter eggs on a wooden riser.

Pieces like these are ideal for layering on mantels and shelves, adding softness, color, and that collected-over-time look we love.

Another wonderful source for floral and botanical art?

Books.

Every thrift store has a plethora of them—just thumb through the pages and look for spring-inspired images you can carefully remove and frame.

It’s such a simple, budget-friendly way to bring fresh, seasonal beauty into your home.

Frames

We are always on the lookout for quality, solid frames with interesting details when thrifting—whether it’s the natural warmth of wood, the elegance of gold, or the clean look of white.

Empty frames can be styled as architectural accents, adding structure and visual interest to walls, mantels, or shelves.

Frame layering is another simple way to create depth and a collected, curated feel in your spring decor.

And the best part?

If a frame doesn’t quite match your style, you can easily transform it with a little paint to give it new life and make it work perfectly for your seasonal decorating.

That’s just what I did with the frame for my floral print!

Linens and Lace

We are always on the lookout for beautiful textiles while thrifting because nothing softens a space quite like layered fabric.

Table runners, napkins, placemats, and other layered textiles are perfect for adding texture and lightness for spring.

We especially love vintage pieces that tell a story.

On this thrifting trip, we came across a few stunning hand-stitched table runners.

They were too small for our table, so we passed them up—and now we regret not grabbing them to repurpose into a pillow or even framed wall art!

Decorating Ideas for Spring with a thrifted curtain panel used as a table runner and styled with a wood riser, mossy bunny topiaries placed in pink footed dishes and an aqua thrift store bundt pan growing wheat grass and styled with easter eggs.

Steph did find a curtain panel that immediately spoke to her.

After washing it, she first styled it as a throw on her sofa, then later used it as a table runner on her dining table—and it would also make beautiful pillow covers.

Placemats and napkins are also great candidates for easy DIY pillow covers or even framed as art.

And I’m always searching for lace and vintage crochet pieces to layer into my home.

These soft, detailed textiles instantly add charm, character, and that airy spring feeling we all crave this time of year.

Decorating with Dishes

There is always an abundance of beautiful and interesting dishes at the thrift store—this is one aisle we never skip!

I’m always on the lookout for unique plates or delicate teacups to add to my collection.

On this trip, I found the sweetest set of four small pastel-rimmed plates in two sizes.

I snagged the larger ones and used them as a riser for my hand-painted egg and regret not getting the smaller set.

Decorating Ideas for Spring with a stack thrifted pastel rimmed plates used as a riser for a hand painted easter egg, styled with magnolia stems and a white Easter bunny.

Once I got home I realized the smaller set would have been perfect inside my cloche.

I also came across a large white bowl with the prettiest detailing around the rim, which became part of my centerpiece on my dining table.

And a vintage floral plate I found layered perfectly with my milk glass vases for a soft spring look.

Decorating with dishes adds instant charm and personality.

Try hanging plates as wall art, layering dishes inside hutches for a collected feel, or using teacups for small floral arrangements.

Steph even found the cutest scalloped pink footed bowls and used them to hold her bunny topiaries.

Simple thrifted dishes can truly become some of the most creative and versatile pieces in your spring decor.

Wicker Trays

Wicker trays are one of our favorite thrift store finds for spring because they instantly add warmth and natural texture to a space.

That woven detail just feels like spring.

They’re perfect for styling coffee tables, dining tables, and ottomans, and they create the ideal base for a simple spring vignette.

Steph found a wicker paper plate holder and used it on her piano to create the sweetest little spring moment.

In my home, I discovered a round wicker tray that I layered over my linens and topped with the large white bowl on my dining table.

Whether large or small, wicker pieces ground your decor and give everything that relaxed, seasonal feel.

Clay Pots

Clay pots practically scream spring—it’s like they’re announcing that it’s time to get back out into the garden.

I love aged terracotta pots or aging them myself for even more character, and honestly, a chip or two just adds to their rustic, vintage charm.

A collection of thrift store clay pots are styled in a thrifted bowl with greenery and tulips on a dining table with brass candlesticks.

They’re perfect for layering into spring vignettes because they bring warmth, texture, and an earthy feel to any space.

Try grouping several together for visual impact, mixing different sizes for that collected look.

And don’t limit them to the outdoors, using clay pots indoors for early spring greenery is such an easy way to freshen up a room.

In Steph’s home, she layered a few into her styling on her sofa table, and they added the perfect natural touch to her spring decor.

Books

I’m always on the lookout for old books that carry a sense of history—it’s even sweeter when I open the cover and find a handwritten inscription inside.

A few years ago, I came across a set of two books that were a Christmas gift from a mother to her son, dated 1898.

Treasures like that are what make thrifting so special.

For decorating, I gravitate toward books with neutral spines that I can easily layer into my decor, while Steph keeps her eye out for beautiful shades of blue.

Thrift store books in shades of blue on styled on a sofa table with mini clay post, faux lavender stems and a potted plant.

On this trip, she added six books to her collection and styled them on her sofa table, stacking some vertically and others horizontally to add height and interest.

She then layered in a few terracotta pots, potted plants, and stems to complete the look.

Whether you create color-coordinated stacks or mix tones for a collected feel, books are the perfect way to add texture, warmth, and personality to your spring vignettes.

Bundt Pans

A bundt pan might seem like an unusual thrifted piece to bring home for decorating for spring.

But they are in abundance at thrift stores—in fact, at one stop we counted ten sitting on the shelf!

Their sculptural shape makes them the perfect unexpected spring centerpiece.

Steph spotted a pretty aqua-colored pan and immediately knew it would be perfect in her home.

She planted it with wheat grass and tucked in a few Easter eggs, creating the sweetest seasonal display.

You could also fill one with moss and candles or use it as a floral centerpiece with primroses, herbs, or tulips.

Bundt pans add a touch of whimsy wherever they’re styled—even outdoors.

We still can’t get enough of the birdbath we made last summer from one!

What other creative ways can you think of to use a bundt pan as decor?

Baskets

Baskets are synonymous with spring and Easter, and there is always a generous supply at your local thrift store.

When shopping, look for baskets that are in good condition and have interesting shapes or unique details.

Thrifted pretty wicker basket with a scalloped top is styled with peonies in a scalloped tray with Easter bunnies on the coffee table.

I was thrilled to find a pretty vintage basket with a scalloped edge around the top—so on trend right now.

Steph came across a nest-shaped basket that was filled with tired florals.

She simply removed the old arrangement and replaced it with a little moss and a few carrots for the most charming spring display.

Baskets offer storage that feels seasonal and light, whether styled on shelves, tucked beside a sofa, or used on a console table.

They also look beautiful arranged on a wall for added texture and dimension.

Don’t be afraid to layer different weaves and tones together—mixing shapes and materials creates depth and gives your spring decor that collected, cozy feel.

Milk Glass

Milk glass is a classic when it comes to spring decorating.

Its crisp white finish adds instant brightness and freshness to any space, making it perfect for the season.

I’m always on the lookout for a piece or two to add to my collection, and on this trip I was so excited to spot a beautiful hobnail vase for only $2.

Decorating for spring with a collection of vintage milk glass bud vases styled with white roses on a vintage chest, thrift store plates, table runner, brass lamp and Easter photo.

When I got home and did a little research, I discovered it was worth $15–18—love that!

Milk glass is especially beautiful when you mix modern pieces with vintage finds for a layered, timeless look.

Use it as vases for fresh blooms or faux stems, or style it on shelves and mantels for a soft, collected feel.

It’s one of those thrifted staples that never goes out of style and always adds charm to spring decor.

Bird Cages

Birds and bird cages are a staple in my spring and summer decorating—honestly, I love them year-round.

There’s something about their unique shapes and delicate details that instantly feels garden-inspired and whimsical.

I’ve been collecting them over the years, so I was especially excited to add a sweet heart-shaped bird cage to my collection on this trip.

For now, I hung it with a cup hook inside my bookshelf and styled it with eggs and vintage lace, but it would be just as charming displayed out in the garden.

Decorating Ideas for spring: thrifted heart shaped bird cage styled with eggs and hung from the book shelf and embellished with vintage lace, in the back of the shelf is a thrifted watercolor floral painting in a white thrift store frame.

Bird cages are wonderful for creating height in a vignette and adding dimension to shelves or tabletops.

You can fill them with plants, candles, florals, books, or small figurines—there are so many creative possibilities.

They truly are one of the most fun and versatile pieces to incorporate into your spring decor.

Cloche

A cloche is such a simple yet stylish way to highlight seasonal elements in your spring decor.

There’s something special about placing everyday items under glass—it instantly makes them feel intentional and collected.

Fill a cloche with moss, a sweet little nest, or faux eggs to create an easy spring statement.

Steph styled her thrifted cloche with dollar store carrots, and it turned out absolutely charming.

Cloche displays are perfect for adding dimension to tablescapes, mantels, and shelves because they create height and draw the eye.

Whether you keep it minimal or layer in texture, a cloche helps turn small seasonal pieces into a beautiful focal point.

Pots (Ceramic or Decorative)

We are always on the lookout for planters while thrifting because new decorative pots can be surprisingly expensive—and nothing says spring quite like a beautiful planter filled with seasonal blooms.

I immediately loved a large pot I found while thrifting, even though it was a very dark brown and still filled with poinsettias.

With a little white spray paint and a few faux daffodils, my porch was instantly transformed into a space that screams spring.

A thrift store pot is given a makeover for spring with white spray paint and is styled with daffodils on the front porch with an old galvanized watering can, and a gardening bunny on an old chair.

Swapping out winter planters is one of the easiest ways to refresh your home for the season.

Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, textures, or finishes when styling pots.

Grouping several planters together also creates a collected, intentional look that adds charm and personality to your spring decor.

Simple changes can make a big seasonal impact.

Metal Decor

When thrifting, I always look for metal containers with interesting shapes because they add instant visual interest to spring vignettes.

I was immediately drawn to the scalloped, footed design of a decorative metal bowl I found.

I briefly considered painting it a lighter, more spring-like color, but after filling it with robin’s eggs, I decided to keep the rustic vintage brass finish because it added warmth and character.

Spring decorating with a thrifted metal footed scalloped bowl filled with robins eggs, styled on a coffee table with books.

Metal containers are wonderful for bringing in rustic farmhouse touches and can easily be used to hold fresh herbs for a living display.

They also add a subtle industrial contrast when layered with softer spring elements like florals, lace, or natural wood.

It’s all about balancing texture and tone to create a space that feels both charming and collected.

Vases

Vases are a beautiful and versatile addition to your decor any time of year, so when thrifting, we always look for pieces with interesting shapes and details.

We never worry too much about color because it can easily be changed with paint.

This particular vase had beautiful detailing, but the original color didn’t quite fit the palette in my home.

A thrift store vase gets a face lift with layers of brown and white paint, styled with daffodils, twigs and a faux chocolate bunne.

So I layered brown, taupe, and white paint and added a little texture using SaltWash to create a more aged, collected look.

When styling vases, don’t feel like they always need to be filled.

Both empty and filled vases can make a statement depending on how you layer them into your decor.

Try adding branches, faux stems, or fresh blooms to bring in spring life.

Mixing heights and shapes is another great way to create visual interest and make your spring displays feel natural, charming, and thoughtfully styled.

How to Style Thrift Store Finds So They Don’t Look Thrifted

One of the biggest secrets to decorating with thrifted items is learning how to style them so they feel intentional rather than collected from a secondhand store.

The key is editing and restraint—choose a few meaningful pieces and let them shine instead of filling every surface.

Repetition is also helpful for creating cohesion; using similar colors, materials, or shapes throughout your decor helps everything feel connected and purposeful.

Balancing old and new is another important styling trick.

Mixing vintage thrifted finds with more modern or simple pieces keeps your decor from feeling dated and instead gives it a fresh, curated look.

When you focus on texture, harmony, and thoughtful placement, thrift store treasures can easily look like they’ve been part of your home for years.
