How to Paint a Faux Antique Brass Finish

Give shiny, outdated decor a warm vintage glow with this simple faux antique brass finish anyone can do — all for under $10!

I recently picked up a shiny 90’s brass lamp base at the thrift store for $3 — you know the kind — bright, yellow-gold, and anything but timeless.

While that finish had its moment, today’s trends are all about rich, aged metallics that feel warm, lived-in, and full of character.

You’ll find those antique brass finishes everywhere from Magnolia and Anthropologie to Pottery Barn — and I absolutely love the charm they add to a space.

The best part? You don’t need to spend a fortune to get that look.

With just a few simple materials and less than $10, you can transform any dated piece into something that looks like it came straight out of a designer catalog.

This easy DIY technique creates a high-end, vintage brass finish with beautiful texture and depth — no special tools or fancy supplies required.

Whether it’s a lamp base, a vase, a set of candlesticks, or even a decorative bowl, this faux antique brass finish works on just about anything.

It’s an easy, affordable way to bring that timeless, designer-inspired warmth into your home — starting with your next thrift find.

Why We Love This Finish

There’s just something about an antique brass finish that instantly adds warmth and sophistication to a space.

It has that perfect balance of old-world charm and modern elegance — a finish that feels collected, not cookie-cutter.

Unlike the super-shiny brass of the 90s, this version tells a story. It has depth, texture, and just the right amount of patina to make any piece feel timeless.

What I love most is how versatile it is.

This finish pairs beautifully with so many styles — from traditional and cottage to modern farmhouse and even contemporary spaces.

It’s that subtle touch of luxury that makes a room feel more curated and intentional, without being flashy.

And honestly, there’s nothing more satisfying than taking a tired, outdated piece and giving it new life.

Watching a simple lamp base or thrifted vase transform with this faux antique brass finish never gets old — it’s one of those quick DIY wins that completely elevates your decor.

How to Create a Faux Antique Brass Finish

Step 1: Clean and Prep the Surface

Before painting, make sure your piece is clean and free from any grease or residue.

I used Dawn Powerwash, but you can use TSP or Krud Kutter — anything that cuts through oils will do the trick.

Give the surface a good wipe-down, then let it dry completely.

Use painters tape to protect any areas you don’t want to paint.

Shiny

Pro Tip: If your piece is glossy, lightly sand it first to help the paint stick better.

Step 2: Apply Antique Brass Spray Paint

Next, apply Behr Antique Brass Spray Paint and Primer in two light coats.

Don’t rush it — light, even passes are key to avoiding drips and achieving a smooth base.

Let each coat dry according to the directions on the can.

Pro Tip: Spray outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and rotate your piece as you go to cover all angles evenly.

To even make it easier, I placed my lamp base on an old turn table and then used an old box as a spray tent.

Step 3: Stipple on Metallic Arcylic Paint

Once your brass base coat is dry, it’s time to bring in some texture and depth.

Using an old sprung artist brush or stencil brush, stipple on DecoArt Metallic Acrylic Paint in Rich Espresso.

This is the same paint we used to make our Christmas bells look so realistic.

Dip your brush lightly into the paint, then tap most of it off before dabbing onto your surface.

Apply the paint in a pouncing motion randomly on your piece, allowing some of the original antique brass paint to show through.

You’re trying to mimic the natural patina of real aged brass.

Step 4: Add a Dusting of Black Spray Paint

Now this is where the magic happens!

For the final touch, hold your flat black spray paint about 12–18 inches from the surface and give it a light “dusting.”

This adds instant age and dimension, softening the shine of the metallic layers beneath.

You’re not trying to fully cover the surface — think of it as adding a shadow that gives the finish more depth.

Pro Tip: Less is more here! It’s easier to build up the aged look than to remove too much black paint.

If it is a little darker than you envisioned, apply another layer of the Rich Expresso paint and then apply more black spray paint if necessary.

Optional Step: Seal the Finish

If your piece will be handled often, finish it off with a matte clear sealer.

It will help protect the finish while keeping that beautiful aged sheen intact.

Once everything is dry, step back and admire your work!

You’ve just turned an ordinary piece into a stunning, vintage-inspired treasure with the rich, layered look of real antique brass.

Pieces You Can Transform

My first project using this finish was a pair of thrifted chrome lamps.

I loved their shape, but that shiny chrome just felt too modern for my space.

Once I gave them the antique brass finish, they completely transformed — suddenly they looked classic, warm, and expensive, without the price tag!

After that success, I couldn’t stop!

Next up was a thrifted decorative plate that had great texture, but not my style, and then a shiny 90’s brass lamp that needed a little aging to fit in with today’s softer, vintage-inspired trends.

Each time, the results amazed me — that rich, aged look instantly elevated every piece.

Now, I’m eyeing a few candlesticks for my next project.

But honestly, you can use this finish on just about anything. Try it on:

  • Vases and decorative bowls for a collected, designer feel
  • Picture frames or mirrors to add depth and warmth
  • Busts or statues for a museum-inspired vibe
  • Trays and tabletop decor that could use a touch of luxury
  • Hardware or knobs to tie together mixed-metal finishes

Once you start experimenting with this technique, you’ll see how easy it is to give ordinary items that faux antique brass finish that feels timeless and intentional.

It’s a simple DIY that makes any piece look like it has a story to tell.

Pro Tips for the Best Results

Before you dive into your own project, here are a few helpful tips I’ve learned along the way.

These little details make a big difference in achieving that authentic, aged brass look:

  • Start with light layers. It’s always easier to build up color and depth than to tone it back down. Go slow and let each layer dry before adding more.
  • Test your technique first. Try your paint layers on a practice piece to get a feel for the coverage and texture.
  • Vary the stippling. Don’t aim for perfection — a mix of lighter and heavier dabs of paint helps create that natural, uneven patina you see on real aged brass.
  • Keep the black spray paint subtle. A light mist gives you that aged, timeworn depth. Too much will dull the brass tones too much, so go easy!
  • Seal only if needed. For decorative pieces that don’t get much handling, you can skip the sealer. For lamps, trays, or anything that’s touched often, a matte clear coat will help protect your finish.
  • Work in good lighting. It’s easier to judge the sheen and texture when you can really see how the layers are blending.

With a little patience and a few thin layers, you’ll end up with a finish that looks beautifully aged — the kind of piece that feels like it’s been collected over time, not freshly painted.

Final Thoughts

And there you have it — a simple, budget-friendly way to turn any shiny, outdated piece into something with timeless character and warmth.

I still can’t get over how that 90’s shiny brass thrifted lamp transformed with just a few coats of paint.

Just take a look at the before and after!

It went from dated and brassy to cozy and classic — and for less than $10!

I was able to complete all four pieces with one can of antique brass spray paint and still have more than enough of the flat black paint and rich espresso paint to transform more decor!

This faux antique brass finish truly adds that perfect designer touch to any piece.

Whether you’re refreshing a thrift store find or updating decor you already have, it’s such a satisfying way to bring texture and depth into your home.

Every project turns out a little bit different, and that’s part of the beauty — no two finishes are ever exactly alike.
