What Is The Public Domain?
The public domain consists of creative works that are no longer protected by intellectual property laws, such as copyright, and can be freely used by anyone.
This includes classic literature, vintage art, historical documents, and more.

Works typically enter the public domain because their copyrights have expired, the creators have relinquished their rights, or the works were never eligible for copyright protection in the first place.
The copyright for most works will expire, and the work will enter the public domain either 95 years after publication or 70 years after the artist’s death.
The public domain serves as a huge repository of the arts, providing unlimited access to a wide array of resources just for you.

Is It Legal to Download Art?
The legality of downloading art depends on the source and the copyright status of the artwork.
Downloading art that is in the public domain is legal because these works are no longer protected by copyright and are free for public use.
However, downloading copyrighted art without permission from the copyright holder is illegal and considered copyright infringement.
It’s important to verify the copyright status of the artwork and ensure that the source you are downloading from has the rights to distribute the art.
Many websites offer legally downloadable art that’s free or licensed art under specific conditions.
Can I Sell Public Domain Art?
Yes, you can sell public domain art because it is not protected by copyright and is free for anyone to use for commercial purposes.
Selling public domain art allows individuals and businesses to create products, such as prints, posters, or digital downloads, without legal restrictions on reproduction or distribution.
However, make sure you verify the public domain status of the artwork to ensure compliance with copyright laws and to avoid mistakenly selling copyrighted works.
Tips for Searching for Free Printable Wall Art
When visiting sites offering free printable wall art, it’s important to note that not all art available may be in the public domain.
Some artworks may still be under copyright or have specific usage restrictions.
It’s wise to narrow your search to open access art, which includes works explicitly marked as public domain.
Most of these sites provide clear information about the copyright status of each artwork, ensuring you can safely and legally download and use the art for your home.
At first it may seem overwhelming when you look at the number of pieces of art available.

Narrow you search by selecting the type of art you are looking for such as botanicals, landscapes, portraits etc.
Some sites will also let you narrow your site by location or artist as well.

Printing Options for Free Wall Art
When it comes to printing your free wall art, you have several options.
First you can easily print your wall art at home for pieces that are 8″ x10″ or smaller.
Make sure to select a good quality paper and select “photo quality” or “best quality”.

However with the high cost of home printer ink, we like to have ours printed at our local printer, Office Depot or Staples.
Another quick and easy resource is Walmart or Walgreens having the art printed on photo paper.
In addition, you’ll find online resources like Shutterfly, Vista print, Mpix or Giclee Today are great options as well.
Sizing Printable Wall Art
Sizing your free printable wall art for optimal resolution is crucial to achieving a professional and clear print.
Start by checking the resolution of the digital file.
Often when you select your image for download it will state the pixels of the image.
If not, you can right click on the image after you download it and you’ll be able to find the pixel dimensions.

This handy chart will help you determine the largest size you can print your image.

For the floral image my mom chose for the primary bathroom, the pixel dimensions are 4096 x 2487, which falls in between the sweet spot and professional grade for a 16″ x 20″ image.
Properly sizing your printable wall art ensures it will look crisp and professional.
Framing
Once you’ve printed your image you’re ready to place it in a frame.
Start by choosing a frame that complements the artwork and matches your decor style.

In my mom’s bathroom she created a gallery mixing modern and vintage frames and free printable wall art with an original oil painting from my aunt.
As you know we love to thrift and it’s a great place to find vintage frames you can repurpose in your home.

Would you believe my mom found this frame for the floral art for only $4 at the thrift store?
It was a little chipped, but with a little European gold Rub n Buff it looks like new.
For a more modern look, skip the frame and consider printing your image on canvas with a wrapped edge through Giclee Today.

Make It Look Like an Original Painting
If you want to forgo the mat and glass, you can make your print look like an original piece of art with glossy Modge Podge.

First mount your image on a piece of foam core or mat board to make it more stable.

Then using a wide artist brush apply glossy Modge Podge with strokes mimicking the brush stokes in the painting.
Cover the entire piece of printed art with the Modge Podge.

Allow it to fully dry, then place in your frame.
As you can see it adds dimension to an otherwise flat image.
It’s so realistic that when my aunt, who is an artist came to see the finished bathroom, thought it was an original piece of art.
If we can fool her, this technique must be convincing!
