Make a Plan
Every great backyard makeover starts with a simple plan.
It doesn’t have to be complicated—just sketch out your ideas on a piece of paper or graph paper to get a feel for the layout.
Make a list of what you’d love to include, how you want to use the space, what you want to keep, and what needs to go to make your backyard truly work for you.
If you prefer a digital approach, free tools like Canva landscape planning templates or SmartDraw can help you visualize your ideas and bring your vision to life before you start digging in.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when your wish list starts to grow, but don’t let that stop you from getting started.
Instead, prioritize your projects and focus on tackling one or two improvements each year.
By breaking it down into manageable steps, you can stay motivated and actually enjoy the process.
Dream big, but take it one project at a time—little by little, your backyard vision will come to life.
Get Weeds Under Control
In our case, the very first project was simply getting a handle on the weeds.
Our home was an estate sale, and while the elderly couple who lived here once had a thriving flower garden, as their health declined, so did the yard maintenance.
We started small, setting aside an hour or two each week to focus on one area at a time.
There were so many plants we wanted to keep, but they were heavily infiltrated with weeds, which made the process challenging.

That’s when we discovered a product called Over the Top, a selective grass killer that targets both annual and perennial grass weeds without harming broadleaf plants.
It can be safely used around vegetables, trees, shrubs, and ornamentals, and we noticed it stopped weed growth within just a couple of days.
It made a huge difference, especially along our large rock retaining wall.
While you still need to pull out the dead grasses, it stops them from spreading and makes the whole process much more manageable.
Build a Patio
Installing a patio and creating an outdoor living space was the first big project we took on in our backyard.
We initially considered pouring a cement patio, but I’ve always loved the vintage charm of pavers, they remind me of the cobblestone streets you see throughout Europe.

As we researched our options, we realized that if we did the labor ourselves, the cost of a paver patio was actually comparable to concrete.
That made the decision easy for us, and it completely transformed how we use our backyard.

And depending on your space and layout, a deck could be another great option to consider.

Create a Garden Path
Creating an affordable garden path or walkway is a simple upgrade that can make a big impact.
In our case, we chose to tear out a narrow strip of grass in the backyard that stayed mostly shaded and always looked a little shabby.
Replacing it with a garden path made the space feel more intentional, easier to navigate and no mowing!

We used flagstone chips for the base and lined the path with pavers, which kept the project both simple and budget-friendly.

Solar Lights
And to add a little ambiance to your backyard, don’t underestimate the power of lighting.
I love how we used thrifted shades to dress up inexpensive solar lights, it instantly made them look so much more high-end.

String Lights

For our outdoor living area, we also strung up café lights overhead, which added the perfect warm glow.
Together, these simple touches create just the right amount of light for a cozy outdoor soirée and make the space feel inviting well into the evening.
Add Shade
Creating shade in your backyard can make all the difference in how usable and comfortable your outdoor space feels.
There are so many options to choose from—everything from a pergola to a sail cloth or even a simple awning.

If you’re lucky enough to have mature trees on your property, you can absolutely use them to your advantage for natural coverage.
In our yard, we enjoy shade from our trees until the afternoon, but by dinner time the sun hits our patio directly.
What we needed was something flexible, so we built a mobile planter box with an umbrella that we can move wherever the shade is needed most.
It’s been the perfect portable solution for our space and allows us to enjoy our backyard comfortably all day long.
Build a Trellis
Add interest and height to your garden with a trellis—it’s a simple feature that makes a big visual impact.

Ours becomes especially stunning when the clematis is in full bloom, adding color and charm to the space.
Not only does it create a beautiful focal point, but it also helps define different areas within the yard.

Rock Retaining Wall
If you have a slope in your backyard, a simple rock retaining wall can make all the difference.
Not only is it functional for holding back soil and creating level areas, but it also adds beautiful texture and a natural, layered look to your space.

Our entire backyard sits on a slope, so we’ve used rock retaining walls to carve out different zones for relaxing, entertaining, and playing.
It’s been a game changer for both function and design.

Garden Fountain
Adding a water feature to your backyard instantly creates a sense of calm, there’s just something so relaxing about the sound of bubbling water.
For years, I wanted to incorporate one into our space, but after building a stream and pond at our previous home, I knew I didn’t want the upkeep that comes with it.

Instead, Steph and I came up with a simple solution and created a faux limestone garden fountain using a styrofoam cooler.
It gives us that same soothing sound without all the maintenance.

Stone Landscape Steps
Adding stone steps to a sloped backyard can make your space so much more functional without sacrificing style.
We desperately needed an easy way to access the upper areas of our yard, but with natural stone steps costing $100–$200 each, it just wasn’t in the budget.

After building a small retaining wall near our garden, we had a lot of stacked stone leftover—something we scored on Facebook Marketplace for just $100 for three trailer loads!
That’s when we came up with a creative way to repurpose the stone into steps along the slope.

Fire Pit
Adding a fire pit creates the perfect gathering spot for fun, conversation, and of course, s’mores!
With so much natural vegetation in our backyard, I was nervous about installing a wood-burning fire pit, worried that one stray ember could set the entire hillside on fire.

Instead, we opted for a simple gas fire pit, which gave us the cozy ambiance without the added risk.
It was surprisingly easy to install and has become one of our absolute favorite spots to relax and unwind.
Tree Swing
Creating dedicated spots for the kids to play has made our backyard even more enjoyable for the whole family.
With our sloped yard, we’ve carved out a few different zones just for them.

One of our favorites is a tree swing—we even figured out how to hang it without a branch!
Click here to see how we did it.
We’ve also made space for a teeter totter and a zipline, and this year we’re planning to add a bocce pit for even more outdoor fun.
Outdoor Furniture
Creating comfortable outdoor lounging and dining areas has always been a high priority for me, but like everything in our backyard, we’re always looking for ways to stretch our budget.

While we’ve purchased some pieces new, many of our favorite finds came from thrifting or even the curb!

For example, the chairs around our fire pit were a free curb-side find that we restored to look like new—no paint required.
Click here for all the details.

We also scored a vintage metal chair at a thrift store, and with just a little paint, it looks as good as new.

Whimsical Garden Decor
Adding charming, whimsical garden decor is one of the easiest ways to bring personality and life into your backyard.
Unique, one-of-a-kind pieces can completely transform a space and make it feel truly special.

This chippy farmhouse chair adds such a delightful, vintage-inspired touch to the garden, while thrifted finds can easily be repurposed into fun, creative accents.

We also created a sweet birdbath using an old bundt pan and a thrifted table base, click here for the details.
The key is to create pieces that feel meaningful and speak to your own style.
Decorate Patio
Bring your backyard to life with charming fabric and thoughtful patio decor.
A simple gingham tablecloth on the dining table or floral accent pillows on lounge chairs can instantly transform your patio into an extension of your home.

Not only do these soft touches add comfort, but they also bring in pattern, texture, and a beautiful pop of color.
You can further decorate your space with accent tables, bird cages, potted plants, woven baskets, or even a vintage picnic basket for extra charm.
Thrifting pieces that speak to you is such an easy and affordable way to style your patio on a budget.
We even found a few lanterns while thrifting that add a warm, lovely glow in the evenings.
Little layers like outdoor rugs, candle holders, and hanging planters can all help tie the space together and make it feel cozy and complete.

Garden Box
Creating a vegetable garden was a top priority for our backyard.
There’s something so rewarding about growing your own food, and one of my favorite additions has been our raised garden boxes.

To keep everything organized and easy to maintain, the boxes also helped define the space beautifully while making planting and harvesting much simpler.
Garden Enclosure
Living in deer country, we quickly learned that a garden enclosure was essential if we wanted anything to survive the season.
