If you’ve been dreaming of creating an outdoor living room but don’t have a big budget, this makeover is proof that it’s possible!
While we already had a beautiful outdoor dining space just off our kitchen, there was only enough room for two lounge chairs.
I’ve always imagined having a cozy spot where we could relax with a good book, sip lemonade on summer evenings, and gather with family and friends.
A few years ago, we added a rock retaining wall to this area of our backyard and placed an old outdoor dining table I had thrifted years before.

It worked as overflow seating during large gatherings, but the heavy chairs were difficult to move and constantly sank into the ground.
I knew there had to be a better solution.
With a budget of just $500 to cover furniture, lighting, plants, containers, and textiles, Steph and I started hunting through our local thrift stores to see what treasures we could find.
The finished space turned out even better than I imagined, and it’s become one of our favorite places to spend time.
Read on to see how we transformed this space, what we found secondhand, and gather plenty of inspiration for creating your own outdoor living room on a budget.

Start with a Comfortable Seating Area
Every inviting outdoor living room starts with comfortable seating.
We chose an area of our backyard that feels tucked away among the maples and oaks, making it the perfect spot to relax or visit with family and friends.
When arranging your furniture, think about conversation first.
Position chairs and sofas so guests can easily face one another, creating a space that feels welcoming and encourages everyone to linger a little longer.
Our goal was to furnish this space almost entirely with secondhand finds, so Steph and I spent an entire day searching our local thrift stores.
We found plenty of outdoor furniture, but nothing that was the right size, style, or condition for our space.
That’s when we expanded our search to Facebook Marketplace, where we discovered pieces that fit our vision perfectly.
If you’re shopping secondhand, don’t settle for the first thing you find.
Measure your space before you shop, be patient, check listings often, and don’t be afraid to mix thrifted pieces with furniture you already own.
A fresh coat of paint, new cushions, or coordinating accessories can tie everything together and make it look like it was purchased as a set.

After a few disappointing days looking on the marketplace, we were thrilled when an outdoor sectional that I had been watching dramatically lowered their price.
And even better it was located only 5 minutes from my home.
We immediately jumped in Steph’s car and went to check it out.
The sectional was perfect for our space and looked practically new, the cushions would just need a little cleaning.
The coffee table is a little worn, but that can easily be replaced down the road.

Define the Space with an Outdoor Rug
One of the easiest ways to make an outdoor space feel like a true outdoor living room is by adding an outdoor rug.
Just like a rug anchors the furniture in an indoor room, an outdoor rug helps define your seating area, adds warmth and texture, while creating that cozy, finished feeling that makes you want to kick back and relax.
When choosing a rug for your space, consider the size first.
You want it large enough for the front legs of your furniture to sit on the rug, which helps visually connect all of the pieces together.
Look for rugs made from durable, weather-resistant materials like polypropylene that can handle sun, moisture, and everyday outdoor living.
The good news is you don’t have to spend a fortune to get the look.
There are many affordable outdoor rugs available online, at discount stores, and even secondhand.
Don’t overlook thrift stores, Facebook Marketplace, or clearance sections at the end of the season.
A rug is one of those simple additions that can completely transform your patio or backyard and make your outdoor space feel like an extension of your home.
Since my outdoor living space is on crushed flagstone, I decided to skip the rug.
But if you have a hard surface like concrete, pavers, or decking, I highly recommend adding one to create a cozy, finished look.

Add Cozy Textiles
One of my favorite ways to make an outdoor living room feel warm and inviting is by adding layers of cozy textiles.
Just like indoors, pillows and throw blankets instantly add comfort, color, and personality to an outdoor living space.
They make your seating area feel less like patio furniture and more like a place where you want to curl up, relax, and spend time.
For cooler evenings, keep a few lightweight throws nearby so guests can stay comfortable long after the sun goes down.

When choosing outdoor pillows and fabrics, look for materials that can handle the elements, such as outdoor-rated fabrics designed to resist fading and moisture.
Don’t be afraid to mix colors, patterns, and textures to create a collected, relaxed look.
One of my favorite budget-friendly tricks is to search thrift stores for pillows, throws, and even fabric pieces that can be repurposed.
Keep an eye out for shower curtains, tablecloths, or beautiful linens that can easily be transformed into custom pillow covers.
With a little creativity, you can add plenty of comfort and style to your outdoor space without spending a lot of money.
To keep my textiles looking fresh and new, I store them in a deck box when they’re not in use and keep protective covers on my furniture to help shield them from the elements and little critters in my yard.
We’ve have a curious squirrel named Lucy, who enjoys pulling stuffing for her nest.
Outdoor furniture covers are a necessity for me!
Decorate with Thrifted Baskets, Pots & Containers
One of the easiest ways to add charm and personality to an outdoor living space is by incorporating thrifted baskets, pots, and containers.
These small details help make an outdoor space feel collected, cozy, and more like an extension of your home.

Vintage baskets are perfect for holding extra blankets, gardening supplies, or even a few potted plants, while thrifted planters and pots add character that you often can’t find with brand-new pieces.
I also love using decorative trays to corral candles, drinks, or outdoor accessories and create little moments that feel intentional.

For this makeover, I was able to find all of the containers for my plants at local thrift stores for less than $25!
Shopping secondhand allowed me to mix different shapes, sizes, and textures while keeping my budget in check.
Don’t be afraid to look beyond an item’s original purpose—an old basket or trunk, serving tray, bowl, or even a unique container can become the perfect outdoor accessory with a little creativity.
These unexpected thrifted touches are what make a space feel personal and one-of-a-kind.

Create Ambiance with Outdoor Lighting
The right lighting can completely transform an outdoor living room and create a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes you want to spend time outside long after the sun goes down.
Just like indoors, layering different types of lighting adds depth and creates that magical evening glow.
Overhead string lights are one of the easiest and most affordable ways to add ambiance.

They can be draped through trees, strung along a pergola, or hung above a seating area to create a cozy glow that instantly makes your backyard feel special.
For my outdoor living room, I created a collected look by using a mix of thrifted lanterns and candleholders throughout the space.
Instead of traditional candles, I opted for remote-control LED candles, which provide the beautiful flickering glow I love while being safer and much easier to use.
Solar lights are another great budget-friendly option for adding soft illumination along pathways, gardens, or around your seating area.
A combination of string lights, solar lights, lanterns, and candles creates layers of light that make your outdoor space feel just as comfortable and welcoming as any room inside your home.
Fill Your Outdoor Living Room with Budget-Friendly Plants
Plants are one of the best ways to bring life, color, and a sense of tranquility to an outdoor living room, but creating a lush space doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune.
There are plenty of ways to save money, from dividing existing perennials in your garden, growing plants from cuttings, and mixing affordable annuals with long-lasting perennials.
Some of my favorite perennials to place in containers are:
- hostas
- daylilies
- lavender
- sedum
- coral bells
- ornamental grasse
Creating height and layers with a variety of containers also adds visual interest and makes your outdoor space feel more like a garden retreat.

As much as I love gardening, this particular area of our yard has been a challenge.
The deer have made it nearly impossible to keep container plants alive, and after watching my beautiful planters become a deer buffet year after year.
I decided to try something very difficult for me—I invested in realistic faux plants.
As a gardener at heart, I love growing my own container gardens, so this was not an easy decision!
However, the realistic options available today add the same lush, welcoming feel without the constant maintenance or disappointment.
Add Charm with Birdhouses & Garden Accessories
The finishing touches are what truly make an outdoor living room feel like an extension of your home, and I love adding pieces that bring personality, charm, and a little bit of whimsy to the garden.
Decorative birdhouses, vintage garden décor, and unique garden art can add character and create little moments of interest throughout your outdoor space.

These are the details that make a backyard feel collected over time rather than decorated all at once.
One of my favorite ways to add charm is by incorporating personal collections and thrifted treasures.
An old watering can, vintage garden tool, flea market find, or repurposed piece can become a beautiful focal point with a little creativity.
The key is to add personality without creating clutter—choose pieces you truly love and give them room to shine.

Create Privacy for a Cozy Retreat
One of the things I love most about our backyard is that it is surrounded by mature trees, which naturally creates a private and peaceful retreat.
The wooded setting makes our outdoor living room feel like a hidden getaway where we can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.
But if your outdoor space doesn’t have natural privacy, there are plenty of beautiful ways to create a more intimate and cozy feeling.
Tall planters filled with greenery, outdoor curtains, lattice panels, and trellises with climbing plants can help define your space while adding beauty and texture.
Shrubs and ornamental grasses are another great option because they provide privacy while creating a lush, garden-like atmosphere.
Whether you’re trying to block a neighbor’s view, hide an unsightly area, or simply make your backyard feel more secluded, these ideas can help transform your outdoor living space into a peaceful retreat.
Shop Thrift Stores Like a Pro
Creating a beautiful outdoor living space on a budget often comes down to having patience, a little creativity, and knowing what to look for when you’re thrift shopping.
When searching for outdoor décor and furniture, don’t limit yourself to items labeled “outdoor.”
Baskets, planters, lanterns, trays, garden décor, and even indoor pieces can often be repurposed for your outdoor space.
Some of the best finds are pieces that may not look special at first glance but have great bones and can be transformed with a little imagination.
One of our favorite thrift shopping tips is to shop early in the week.
We find that Mondays and Tuesdays are often the best days to visit because stores are usually restocked after receiving weekend donations.
Which means the shelves are at their fullest.
Don’t overlook pieces that are scratched, outdated, or painted an ugly color.
A little spray paint, fresh fabric, or a creative update can completely transform a forgotten treasure.
Some of our favorite thrifted finds have been items we almost walked past because we saw their potential rather than what they looked like in the moment.
The key to successful thrifting is learning to think outside the box.
Look beyond an item’s original purpose and imagine how it could work in your space.
An old container can become a planter, a vintage piece can become garden art.
An ordinary find can become the detail that makes your outdoor living room feel unique and personal.
Small Details That Make a Big Difference
It’s often the little details that make an outdoor living room feel complete and inviting.
Adding a coffee table or side tables creates a place to set down a drink, display a few favorite accessories, or gather around during conversations.

Decorative accents like outdoor candles, fresh flowers, serving trays, and seasonal touches bring warmth and personality to the space.
Also using storage baskets to keep blankets, pillows, and outdoor essentials close by while keeping everything looking tidy.
These simple additions may seem small, but they are what transform a basic seating area into a cozy retreat that feels thoughtfully designed and ready to enjoy.
