Definitely one of the easiest and most economical ways to transform or update a space is with paint.
For instance, April at Love Our Real Life refreshed her existing backyard patio furniture with spray paint.
Her patio furniture was looking a little worn yet the bones were still in great shape. This little makeover totally changed the look and feel of her space without spending a lot of money. You’ve gotta love that!

Not only does building it yourself save money, but it’s so rewarding to do it yourself.
If you have never tried to build something out of wood, this project is for you. This adorable playhouse from Maria at Simple Nature Decor is an easy build. The perfect project for a beginner. And what child wouldn’t be thrilled to have their own outdoor playhouse.
While Steph and I have DIYed many projects this Outdoor Farmhouse Bench was the first project we completed all by ourselves.
While it’s not perfect, we are pleased with the results and would make a great addition to any backyard patio.
Backyard Patio Hardscape Ideas
When considering ideas for your backyard patio, the hardscape has to be first on your list. While there are many options from a concrete patio to a deck. Each will provide the foundation for your outdoor living area.
When we purchased our home it had a tiny patio that was about 4′ x 6′. In fact, it was pretty much unusable.
However, with a vision for a larger gathering area, we pushed back the hillside and created this paver patio.
Morgan at Charleston Crafted created a stone look patio using Quickrete and a Walkmaker form. This is an easy doable DIY backyard patio idea any one can accomplish. There is no particular skill needed.
Morgan said she was able to complete the patio in about 7 hours. In addition Morgan shares in another post how to fill in the grooves with polymer sand.
For another quick and easy idea to create a backyard patio take a look at Jennifer’s post “How to Make a Gravel Patio in an afternoon.
While this is a more casual look, it still provides a great outdoor living space on a tight budget.
Definitely, this is my favorite section of this post. I love how each of these creative ladies have set up outdoor rooms. Not only have they deliberately created rooms with their outdoor living retreats, but they have used their DIY skills to do it on a budget.
For example take a look at Carrie’s screened porch from Lovely Etc. She has painted, repurposed and built every piece in this space, creating an outdoor living area her family loves to be in.
You’ll find tutorials for painting furniture, stenciling a floor, along with building furniture. She is one talented lady!
Next up is Wendi’s from H2OBungalow waterfront backyard makeover. Clearly her location and view is spectacular. I mean, who wouldn’t like to kick up their feet and relax here in the evenings.
Wendi has 10 DIY ideas that she did in 30 days to spruce up her backyard patio.
Often we think our space is too small, what can we possibly do with it. Well, Sara at Birdz of a Feather totally transformed her small yard with some amazing backyard patio ideas.
