Here’s What I Used

One of the reasons I love this project is that you don’t need many supplies to recreate the look.

Woman holds a thrifted basket with handles.

Start with a flat basket that can easily hang on your front door—I found mine at a thrift store, but you may already have one tucked away at home.

You’ll also need a piece of styrofoam to anchor your decorations and a few grocery bags to help fill the basket and keep your styrofoam in place.

Styrofoam can be pricy, but always be on the look out for it when thrifting, that’s where mine came from.

Another money-saving tip is to hang on to packing styrofoam, you never know when it might come in handy for a DIY project like this one!

From there, you can personalize it with American flags, flowers, patriotic picks, a coordinating ribbon, or any other patriotic embellishments you have on hand.

This is a great project for using what you already own and keeping costs to a minimum.

Money-Saving Tip

If you’re trying to keep this project budget-friendly, a few simple habits can make all the difference.

I always recommend shopping thrift stores first—you’d be surprised what hidden gems you can find for just a few dollars.

Next, take a quick look through your bins of seasonal decor before buying anything new.

Reusing items from previous years is one of the easiest ways to stretch your decorating budget.

And when you do need a few extras, don’t forget the dollar store!

They usually have plenty of affordable patriotic supplies that work perfectly for a DIY like this without blowing your budget.

One of my favorite tricks is shopping after-season sales.

Right after the holiday, you can usually snag patriotic decor for a fraction of the price and save it for next year.

It’s an easy way to stock up without paying full price and still have plenty of festive pieces on hand when the next 4th of July rolls around.

How to Make a Basket 4th of July Door Decor

Let’s get started on this easy 4th of July door decor, it really can come together in under 10 minutes once you’ve gathered your supplies.

Secure the Styrofoam in the Basket

If you’re adding flags to your basket and want them to stay evenly spaced and stand upright, you’ll definitely want to secure a piece of styrofoam inside.

I actually found mine while thrifting a few months ago—it was brand new and still in the plastic wrapper, so I decided to leave it on to help keep things a little less messy.

View inside a thrifted basket with a thirfted piece of styrofoam and grocery bags placed on the sides of the styrofoam to keep it in position.

To keep the styrofoam centered and snug inside the basket, I simply tucked grocery bags around each side of it.

Just press them in firmly so they fill any gaps and hold the foam in place.

It’s a quick, no-fuss trick that keeps everything stable while you decorate.

Arrange the Flags

For the flags, I used 12×8″ flags that I borrowed from my mom—she’s actually thrifted all of the flags she uses in her decorating, which I absolutely love.

Of course, you can mix things up with different flag sizes or even tuck in faux patriotic florals for extra color and texture.

I like to start with the larger flags first, placing them into the styrofoam to establish the main shape.

Then I vary the heights to add dimension and fan them out slightly so the arrangement feels full, balanced, and really eye-catching from the street.

Add Embellishments

Once the flags are in place, it’s time to add the finishing touches with your embellishments.

For my 4th of July door basket, I kept it simple and just tied on a slightly droopy bow using ribbon I already had in my stash.

It was an easy way to add charm without overthinking it.

Or you can insert a few floral picks, patriotic picks or greenery to soften the look and bring in a little extra texture.

Fluff and Adjust

Once everything is in place, take a step back and really look at your basket from a distance.

This is where the magic of “fluff and adjust” happens.

You’ll likely notice a few spots that need a little tweaking, whether it’s shifting a flag, raising a floral pick, or redistributing the fullness.

Don’t be afraid to rearrange things until it feels balanced and visually pleasing.

And while you’re at it, make sure everything is secure so it can handle being displayed on your front door without shifting around.

A few small adjustments here really make the whole piece come together.

Hang and Enjoy

Now for the best part—hang and enjoy!

If your basket doesn’t already have a way to hang, you can easily attach a simple hanger, but mine just worked perfectly using the built-in handle.

I hang it on a Command hook that I actually keep on my door year-round, which makes switching seasonal decor super easy.

Once it’s up, step back and display it proudly on your front door.

My Favorite Ways to Save Money on Seasonal Decor

Over the years, I’ve found a few simple habits that really help stretch my seasonal decorating budget.

One of my favorites is buying neutral pieces that can be reused in different ways throughout the year, just by switching up the accents, like this coastal basket.

I also make a point to shop thrift stores year-round, because you never know when you’ll stumble on the perfect piece for a future project.

Repurposing decor from other holidays is another easy win—sometimes all it takes is a quick coat of paint or a little creative tweaking to give something a whole new life.

And of course, I always store leftover supplies and embellishments so they’re ready to go for the next DIY idea that comes along.
