Last fall I saw a finger knitted pumpkin from Kimberly at A Wonderful Thought. I immediately fell in love with it. This was a fall craft that I really wanted to try. Once I made one I was hooked and wanted to make several to add to my fall decor this year.
Are you looking for a unique fall craft to add to your autumn decor this year? Then you will want to try this easy fall craft, a finger knit pumpkin. It is simple enough that even children can do it.
These soft and chunky yarns add that warmth we are longing to bring into our homes for the fall holidays.

As the weather cools, I start thinking about fun fall crafts to add for my holiday decor.
Two days ago we had a huge wind storm come through that wreaked havoc in our area. We will be cleaning up the mess for days.
Not only did we experience 80 MPH winds, but our temperatures also dropped by 40º. It is really starting to feel like fall here! This fall craft is the perfect project to do while cozied up in a blanket.

How to finger knit for fall craft
Note: It may be easier to learn the finger knitting technique with the video tutorial.
Begin by placing the end of the yarn between your middle and index finger.Wrap the yarn behind the middle finger and then around to the back side of the index finger in a figure 8 pattern. This will form 2 complete loops around your finger.
Repeat, so you have 2 loops on each finger.
First pull the back loop over the front loop on your index finger. Then pull the back loop over the front loop on your middle finger.
After the first 2 loops are made, pull the tail tight. Repeat by wrapping the yarn around your fingers again and pull the loops over again.
Then pull the tail towards the palm of your hand.
Continue finger knitting until it reaches the desired length. It should reach from the stem of the pumpkin to the center on the bottom of the pumpkin.

To tie off the end cut a 2″ tail and place the loop that was on your index finger through the middle finger loop. Next, take the cut end and thread through the loop and pull.
Continue to make these finger knitted strips until you have enough to cover a pumpkin. It will depend on the size of pumpkin you use. For example I needed about 25-30 for this pumpkin, whereas the large pumpkin took more like 40-45.
Applying Finger Knitted Strips
Apply the finger knitted strips for this fall craft by running a bead of hot glue down the groove of the pumpkin. Then place a knitted strip starting at the top edge near the stem, along the groove to the center of the bottom of the pumpkin.
Once all of the grooves are covered with the knitted strips, cut the tails from the top and bottom of the pumpkin.
Next, fill in the raised areas of the pumpkin with more of the finger knitted strips. These may be too long for the area.

Finally trim any remaining tails.

Embellish Fall Craft
Once all of the finger knitted strips are on your pumpkin you can embellish it as you wish.
The original stem can be reinserted or a piece of a branch can be inserted. I also cut a leaf from a scrap of fabric and glued it to the top. Finally I added a piece of jute for the curly-q.
