Not only is adding ribbon an easy and affordable way to get a new look, but it’s a classic and timeless way to refresh your Christmas tree.

Whether you prefer a simple and understated look or a more elaborate and elegant design, there are countless ways to incorporate ribbon into your holiday decor.

What is The Best Ribbon for a Christmas Tree?

The best ribbon for a Christmas tree depends on your desired look and feel, but a few key features make some ribbons stand out.

Wired ribbon is the most versatile, as it holds its shape beautifully for bows, loops, and cascading designs.

Velvet ribbon adds a luxurious touch, perfect for traditional or elegant themes, while burlap or plaid ribbons bring a rustic or farmhouse charm.

Sheer or metallic ribbons are ideal for creating a subtle shimmer, elevating your tree’s lights.

When choosing ribbon, consider the tree’s color scheme and the size of the tree—wider ribbons work well for larger trees, while narrower ones are better for smaller trees or delicate decorations.

In addition, mixing textures, patterns, and widths can create a stunning, layered look.

How Much Ribbon Will I Need for My Christmas Tree?

The amount of ribbon you’ll need for your Christmas tree depends on the tree’s size and how full you want the ribbon to be.

A general guideline is about 1 yard of ribbon per foot of tree height, if you’re covering the tree generously with cascading or wrapped designs.

For a 7-foot tree, this means approximately 21 yards of ribbon.

If you’re using ribbon sparingly or as an accent, you can reduce this amount.

However, to avoid running out, it’s always a good idea to purchase an extra spool or two, especially if you’re mixing different ribbon styles for a layered effect.

One of my favorite places to purchase Christmas ribbon is Sam’s club.

Their rolls are a generous 50 yards and are under $10.

It makes adding ribbon to a Christmas tree so affordable!

Do You Put Ribbon on a Christmas Tree First or Last?

I suggest putting ribbon on a Christmas tree after the lights, but before adding ornaments.

Not only do I find it easier to manipulate the ribbon between the branches, but it also ensures that the ribbon is balanced around the tree.

Cascading Ribbon Garland

Creating a cascading garland with ribbon on your Christmas tree adds an elegant, flowing look that complements your holiday decor.

Here’s how to achieve this effect:

1. Choose Your Ribbon: Select one or more ribbons, I prefer wired to help maintain shape. Use ribbons in complementary colors for added depth and texture.
2. Cut the Ribbon: Cut the ribbon into strips, typically 18″-24:, depending on the size of your tree. This makes it easier to work with and allows for easy adjustments.
3. Start at the Top: Anchor one end of a ribbon strip at the top of the tree using a branch or floral wire. Let the ribbon drape naturally down the tree.
4. Tuck and Flow: Gently tuck the ribbon into the branches every 12–18 inches, creating soft loops or waves as you go. For a more organic look, vary the spacing and angle of each tuck.
5. Work in Sections: Repeat the process around the tree, staggering the ribbons to ensure the design looks balanced. Use multiple ribbons layered together for a fuller effect.
6. Adjust as Needed: Step back often and assess the overall look. Fluff or reposition the ribbon as needed.

Once your ribbon garland is in place, you can add ornaments and other embellishments to complete your tree’s design.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Select Your Ribbon: Choose a wired ribbon to help maintain the shape of the streamers.
2. Measure and Cut: Cut the ribbon into long strips, ensuring each piece is a couple of feet longer than the height of your tree.
3. Anchor at the Top: Secure one end of the ribbon at the top of the tree by tucking it into the branches, tying it with floral wire, or attaching it beneath the tree topper.
4. Create Movement: Let the ribbon fall naturally down the tree. You can allow it to cascade in straight lines for a sleek look or loosely twist it for added texture.
5. Tuck Along the Way: Gently tuck sections of the ribbon into the tree branches at various intervals to integrate the streamers into the tree’s design. This helps the ribbon look more natural and secure.
6. Finish at the Bottom: Leave the ribbon ends loose to pool slightly at the base of the tree or trim them to your desired length.

This technique involves twisting or spiraling the ribbon into loose coils that wrap around the tree, creating a dynamic and polished look.

Start by cutting a long strip of wired ribbon, which helps maintain the coiled shape.

Gently roll the ribbon and then pull into a spiral,

Secure it to the tree by tucking it into the branches at random intervals.

For a fuller effect, layer multiple ribbons in complementary colors and patterns.

Ribbon coils are perfect for filling gaps in the tree and adding a festive element to your Christmas tree.

Double Ribbon Loops

Double ribbon loops are a beautiful way to add fullness and texture to your Christmas tree.

To create them, use wired ribbon for structure and form two large loops about 7–8 inches long, leaving a generous 12-inch tail.

Secure the loops with a staple to hold the shape, then fluff the loops.

Tuck the loops randomly into the tree, nestling them into branches to create a natural, cascading effect.

The long tails can drape down or curl to add a playful touch.

Triple Ribbon Loops

A triple ribbon loop is an elegant way to add volume and dimension to your Christmas tree.

To make them, use about 1 1/2 yards of wired ribbon to create three large loops, each about 12-14 inches in length, and leave a long 12-inch tail.

Secure the loops together by attaching two paperclips on each side of the ribbon, which will hold the loops in place while maintaining their shape.

Once secured, tuck the loops into the branches of the tree, positioning them randomly for a natural, cascading effect.

Fluff the loops to give them a fuller, more dimensional appearance.

The long tails can be left to drape, creating a beautiful and festive look.

For a couple of years now, I’ve been a little envious of my mom’s beautiful Christmas tree in her bedroom.

So I though it was about time I got a new tree for my bedroom.

I don’t have a lot of space in my room for a Christmas tree, so I ordered a 6′ Prince tree from King of Christmas.

It’s the perfect size for a bedroom since it’s only 44″ wide!

To start, choose your ribbon, wired ribbon is not necessary for bows, unless you’d like to strategically style them.

Choose your preferred color, texture, and pattern.

For a simple elegant look, try a pretty narrow velvet ribbon tied into simple bows.

Cut the ribbon into strips, depending on the size of the bow you want to create.

Tie a simple bow and place them into the branches of the tree, spreading them evenly around the tree for balance.

You can vary the size of the bows and mix different ribbon styles for added dimension and visual interest.

For an extra festive touch, let the tails of the bows cascade down the tree or curl them for a whimsical effect.

Ribbon Tree Topper

A ribbon bow topper is a timeless and elegant way to crown your Christmas tree.

To create a beautiful bow topper, start with a wide, wired ribbon that complements your tree’s colors and theme.

Form a large bow with multiple loops—I typically like to have 6-10 loops, depending on how full you want the bow to be.

Secure the bow in the center with floral wire or twist ties, then shape the loops to create a large bow.

Attach the bow securely to the top of the tree by wrapping the wire around the tree’s top branch.

Let the tails of the bow cascade down the tree or gently curl them for added drama.

Also creating your bow tree topper with a variety of ribbons will make your tree a showstopper!

This simple yet stunning addition not only gives your tree a polished finish, but also serves as a striking focal point that ties together your entire holiday decorations.
