It’s week 8, reveal day of the One Room Challenge and we’re thrilled to share with you our Star Wars small bedroom ideas on a tight $500 budget!
Over the past 8 weeks, we have painted, sanded, stained, dyed and repurposed practically every element in this Star Wars themed bedroom.
No doubt, when your budget is tight you need to roll up your sleeves and DIY your way to an amazing space.
While we are delighted with the way this room turned out, more importantly Aiden is thrilled with his Star Wars themed bedroom.
If you remember from week 1 of the challenge we shared our plan and wanted this bedroom to grow with him.
I’m certain in a few years his obsession with Star Wars will pass and he’ll want his room updated again.
With that in mind, we were careful how we made this themed bedroom come about.
So let’s get started with our Star Wars small bedroom ideas that won’t break the bank!

Bedroom Before Makeover

Let’s take a look at what this small bedroom looked like just 8 weeks ago.
Actually, I still loved the room just the way it was.
I loved the kelly green stripped ceiling, and the industrial elements like the wood and pipe desk with shelves.
But since my boys decided to switch rooms, it was time for a makeover.
Our goal was to spend just $500 while transforming this industrial style bedroom in to a modern Jedi retreat.
Do you think we were able to keep it under $500?

Star Wars Small Bedroom Ideas
Clearly my top priority in this small bedroom makeover is a room that will last for years to come.
And I’m not a huge fan of themed rooms, because we all know this Star Wars phase won’t last forever and Aiden will be begging for a room makeover again!
Paint and LED Lights

So we created a neutral base that can easily be updated when Aiden has a new obsession.
We began this makeover with a fresh coat of paint, first by painting the ceiling in a flat black.
Then we brought that color down about 14″ on the wall to help this small bedroom feel larger.
Next we painted the walls in Sherwin Williams Pure White, which really brightens up the room.

One feature Aiden really wanted in his room was LED strip lighting.
And while I don’t mind the lights, I didn’t want to see them. So we came up with the idea to hide them with moulding.
At the color break we added cove moulding and then installed the LED strip lights.
You can see the full tutorial here.

I must admit the LED lights really add a cool vibe to the room.
The lights can be changed to tons of colors with the remote control and will also sync with bluetooth and will dance to the music.
And my favorite part it that you can’t see any cords!
The Bed
Certainly with a small budget like ours, you need to refinish, paint and repurpose what you have.

I purchased the bed second hand 8 years ago on Facebook marketplace and it was in need of a little love.
The drawers were broken and did not slide well.
So, we fixed them up with glue and brads, added some graphite to help the drawers slide better and gave the drawer fronts a new coat of black paint.
Now the bed looks as good as new and fits in with our color scheme.
In this small bedroom, there isn’t room for a dresser with the built-in desk, so keeping this bed with the drawer storage is paramount.

And while the bones of the bed are neutral, adding Star Wars bedding and a Darth Vader plushie bring in our theme.
Updated Desk with Shelves
When Aiden and Gavin swapped rooms, the one element that Aiden loved and wanted to stay in the room was the desk and shelves.

He is a budding artist and loves to spend time at the desk creating his masterpieces.
But it’s also a great place for storage and displaying all of his Star Wars memorabilia.

Originally this wood and pipe desk with shelves had a very rustic feel, but we gave it a little makeover with a black stain.

And now it feels much more modern and still functions well in this small bedroom.
Just look at all the storage it provides in this small bedroom!
This space is also the perfect homework station.

The Nightstand
As you can see there isn’t a lot a space in this bedroom and we intend to build another set of drawers for the left side of the bed.
So in order to have a nightstand it needs to be floating.

We actually made this modern floating nightstand from an old traditional piece my mom had in storage.

So this project was practically free!

I just had to purchase the drawer pull, paint and moulding for the geometric design.
Window Treatments

We were able to keep the same curtains in the room, but updated them with black dye.
You can read all about how we dyed the curtain panels in the washing machine here.
Fabric dye is an easy and affordable way to change the look of any fabric in your home.
Star Wars Art, Decor and Accessories
While keeping to our plan, the shell and large pieces of this bedroom are neutral, it’s with “The Force” of the Star Wars art and decor that brings this bedroom to life!

I found the 5 canvas wall panels for $20 on Amazon and just had to mount them to a wood frame.
While we didn’t make a blog post for this, you can see how we made the frames in our Instagram highlight.

Another fun way to bring in the Star Wars vibe is with Aiden’s collection of light sabers.

I found these clear acrylic light saber holders on Amazon and you can mount them either horizontally or vertically.

Plus it’s a great way to store his toys and it makes great decor for the walls.

The open shelves are the perfect place to display all of Aiden’s Star Wars memorabilia.
The framed Star Wars art is from Hobby Lobby and most everything else on the shelves are items Aiden has been collecting.

Aiden is so proud of his collection of Lego Star Wars creations.

While we were going through all of his Star Wars stuff, we came across his Death Star suitcase, which we found a couple of years ago at the thrift store and it looks terrific up on the shelves.

The shelves are filled with all of his Star Wars treasures including his own artwork.

In keeping with the modern vibe for this room, we were thrilled to be gifted this modern round ottoman with a black base from Wovenbyrd.

It’s perfect in this small bedroom as a seat at the desk and I love the sleek modern legs with the white upholstery.
